This book celebrates the Way of Tea from its ancient origins in Chinese Taoism to its culmination in the Zen discipline known as the Japanese tea ceremony. Tea was first used as a medicine by the ancient Chinese Taoists, then Buddhist monks made drinking tea part of a meditative practice honoring the founder of Zen. The Book of Tea was written by a little known author in 1906, and initially considered an esoteric work. Okakura Kakuzo, a Japanese philosopher, art expert, and curator, would later emerge as one of the great thinkers of the early 20th century who bridged Western and Eastern cultures.
