Overview:

Untitled DocumentIt is the greatest war in American history - 3 million fought and over 600,000 died - and now you can experience it yourself in The Civil War Collection Vol. 1. The collection contains one first-rate history - "Captains of the Civil War" by William Wood, and two first-hand accounts - "The Memoirs of U.S. Grant" and "The Memoirs of General W.T. Sherman." Grant's memoir has been called "perhaps the finest military memoirs ever written. ...Clear, concise, and surprisingly honest." Sherman's memoirs are described as "one of the great memoirs of the war! Outspoken, and frank ..."It began on April 12, 1861 at 4:30 A.M. when Confederates troops opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. Union troops were defeated in their first major battle, Bull Run, against the Confederates commanded by Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, earning him the nickname "Stonewall." In April, the Battle of Shiloh was an eye-opener for both sides when 13,000 Union and 10,000 Confederate troops were killed or wounded. This was more than in all previous American wars combined. In January, 1863, Lincoln gave U.S. Grant command of the Army of the West and ordered him to take Vicksburg. Six months later, and after a six week siege, he succeeded, effectively cutting the South in two. In March, 1864, Grant was named commander all of the U.S. armies, and Sherman took over the Army of the West. In November, Sherman took Atlanta, then began his March to the Sea, proclaiming, "I can make Georgia howl!" On April 9, 1865, Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia. Five days later, Lincoln attended a play at Ford's Theater in Washington, where he was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth. On April 18th, the last Confderate holdouts under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to Sherman, and the war was over. It cost over 620,000 lives. To read The Civil War Collection Vol. 1 on your Palm, you must first have eReader installed. If you don't already have it, you can download a free copy from their web site.
