Once upon a midnight dreary on the night of January 19, 1949, a mysterious man dressed all in black stole through the shadows of the Old Western Burying Ground Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland and laid on the gravestone of its most famous resident, Edgar Allan Poe, a half drunk bottle of cognac and three red roses. This same ritual has been repeated every January 19th, Poe's birthday, since then. In 1993, the cognac and roses were accompanied by a note reading, The torch will be passed and since then, a younger man has appeared. Every year, Poe scholars watch the "Poe Toaster" from the bellfry of neighboring Westminister Church, which overlooks the cemetary, but have never attemted to learn the "Poe Toasters" identity.
