Overview:

It was one of the strangest meetings ever rumored to have taken place - Richard Nixon meeting with Elvis Presley in the Oval Office to make Presley a "Federal Agent-at-Large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs! Now, through recently declassified documents, this bizarre meeting is no longer the subject of rumor, but fact, and you can view it all in Elvis Meets the Prez.On December 21, 1970, the King of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, paid a visit to President Richard M. Nixon at the White House. Their meeting was initiated by Elvis, who wrote Nixon a six-page letter while on board an airplane heading to Washington, where Elvis intended to remain until Nixon agreed to meet with him. The events leading up to and after the meeting are detailed in Elvis Meets the Prez, including Elvis' handwritten letter, memoranda from Nixon staff members, a thank-you note from Nixon to Elvis for gifts received (a gun), and photographs taken in the Oval Office. Some of the meeting's more bizarre events are: Presley accusing the Beatles of "being a real force for anti-American spirit" Presley telling Nixon, I "have done an in-depth study of drug abuse and Communist brainwashing techniques" Nixon aide Dwight Chapin stating in a memo to H.R. Haldeman that Nixon wants to meet "bright young people" and "Presley might be a perfect one to start with" to which Haldeman replies, "You must be kidding" Nixon's staff suggesting that Elvis "record an album with the theme 'Get High on Life' at the federal Narcotic Rehabilitation and Research Facility at Lexington, Kentucky Nixon's apparent interest in "the King's" bling-bling cuff links.Viewed from nearly 35 years after it took place, this meeting of two of the 20th century's most influential and fatally flawed men is both funny and poignant. Three years later, Nixon would resign the Office of President in disgrace, and five years after that, Elvis would be found dead of a drug overdose on his toilet. But on that cold December day, the King truly met the Prez.To read Elvis Meets the Prez on your Palm, you must first have eReader installed.
