Originally named Pearl Gray (his parents must have had a sense of humor), Grey was born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1872, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in dentistry. He practiced in New York City where he began to write, however, it was during a trip to the West in 1908 that Grey discovered his true calling: writing western-themed novels. He produced over ninety works, many of which were turned into famous movie westerns, and sold an astounding 17 million copies during his lifetime.
